Style

Welcome to our January Blog  What do we mean by Style? So what do we mean by style? First of all we need to understand the difference between Style and Genre.  A "genre" is the word for a categorization, so rock music, progressive rock, etc are all genres. Think of a genre as a label. A "style" is what you call a specific element of the music. For instance, David Gilmour's guitar playing style is melodic with lots of string bends.   Source: https://music.stackexchange.com/questions/21936/whats-the-difference-between-genre-and-style This means you can sing a classical song in a rock style and vice versa. What we will be addressing is how to sing a specific genre in its correct style. For example, to sing rock music, you will need to learn the style or technique of vocal distortion in the form of growls or screams.

How is this achieved? As always, we need vocal balance as a homebase before we explore any extremes in the voice.  We can again borrow unfinished sounds and vowels, scale patterns etc to develop a laryngeal posture to help us discover certain techniques that lend to a particular style. ​How do we do it? An example is using an edgy M to find subglottal stop, meaning to bring the chords together fully and stop airflow, this is used a lot in some beatboxing techniques. Reversing this and sucking the air in through the vocal folds also creates interesting effects. Using an OH or UH in the lower register and imposing or pushing down the larynx like in a yawn then slowly adding resistance can get you a growl effect.  Look out for our youtube video to see how this is achieved. ​
