Song Application

Welcome to our November Blog

What do we mean by Song Application?

So what do we mean by song application? Song Application involves applying what we have learnt already into a song. We want to match vocalise vocal balance to song vocal balance. So let's recap. So far we have covered how to find vocal balance by discovering both chest and head registers and chest and head voice, connecting these and how to then coordinating and conditioning the whole voice. We also covered dynamics including vibrato and volume. Song Application can be used at all stages of development and as your voice grows the songs can become more challenging.

How is this achieved?

First we have to think about our Goal and from this make the desired song choice. So if we want to develop a stronger chest voice we need to select slower, lower songs. If we want to encourage vibrato we look for songs with lots of sustained notes. And so on.

How do we do it?

Once we have our song choice we can attempt to sing the song on the vocalise we discovered helped us balance when doing scales to build muscle memory. For example singing on a NUH on songs that go into the 2nd passage to try to keep the vowel narrow. We then slowly add the lyrics while maintaining this posture. This can take time and the old habit can try and sneak back in on a song as the old memory/circuit is still there but over time we build a new neuro pathway and so a new, better habit.  We can also break down particular phrases that may be tricky and modify the vowels and breath patterns to help us find coordination and balance.
